Group Texting for Your Church

  • Call us to discuss the best way to upload your contacts
  • Decide on the keywords you'd like to use. How many and which groups you'll be sending to, by naming them with "campaigns"
  • Once that's done, we'll help you compose your messages, or you can compose them yourself
  • Select your contacts, campaigns, and broadcast schedule and queue up to send

Segmenting groups can help you be more effective in utilizing your messages. For example, a church youth group comprised of teens and young professionals may not be interested in hearing about a Bible study group aimed at couples in their 60s. You’ll want to avoid sending SMS and MMS to members who won’t be interested in your message. This helps ensure that donations aren’t wasted.

Once your text message has been sent, your selected groups will receive it in minutes. Our tools can help you refine your message, see what church members respond to, and even manage your opt-ins/outs.

How Effective are Church SMS Text Messages?

Texts from churches (or other religious groups) will reach your congregation wherever they are, whatever they are doing. Consider the following statistics:

  • 80% of adults text, making it the most-used activity on cell phones. Source: Pew Research Center.
  • Texts are opened 98% of the time, compared to just 20% for emails. Source: Mobile Marketing Watch.
  • Millennials, the future of your congregation, send 67 texts per day. Source: Business Insider.

Simply put, texting church members is the most effective and immediate way to reach your congregants. Text messages are how your members want to be contacted, and younger church members seem to always have their phone in-hand. Texting boosts event attendance, promotes volunteerism, increases donations, can help you request assistance for members in need, and lets you send church invitation text messages with ease. Also, SMS can be used to help congregants text in church questions and issues related to operations.

Group texting can also help congregants stay engaged with their faith. A simple SMS, such as a Biblical passage, can keep members thinking about their faith. MMS, such as a picture or video of church members helping the less fortunate, can inspire congregants and even have a positive effect on donations.

Church texting services provide churches and other religious groups with a more modern, cost-effective solution for connecting with congregants. Text messages are opened five times more than emails are and are responded to seven times more often!

By leveraging the power of texting, and group/bulk texting, churches and other religious organizations can strengthen their community impact.

Whether you’re seeking volunteers for an event or requesting donations for a family in need, your messages won’t yield results if they go unnoticed. Bulk texting can help faith-based organizations:
  • Promote community engagement
  • Increase event attendance
  • Coordinate volunteers
  • Encourage donations
  • Share inspirational messages

5 Tips to Help You Share Your Church With Your Community

Just like most businesses, churches are always looking for new ways to promote themselves to attract new people. If you’re looking to grow your congregation and attendance at services, the following 5 tips can help you effectively market your church.

Tip #1 Identify community groups based on their interests

More than 80% of Americans do not prioritize going to church on Sundays, which has lead churches to look for new avenues to connect with people in and around their community. People are driven to do what excites them. If that is not attending church, then what might it be?
In order to answer that question, churches are involving current members across multiple demographics including age, gender, and professions, to come up with their target audience. Think about portraying an image of the church to those you want to attract.
One example of a new image is the message “Rethink Church.” The United Methodist Church targeted 18 to 34-year-olds in order to change their image from passive to an active community of believers that interact 24/7.

Tip #2 Discover which people or groups your church can realistically reach

How will you reach your target church member? When you determine what group or demographic you can effectively serve, the method of communications will be different for each of these target groups. Your church’s culture and personality will help you in more effectively reaching a target market. Pick several groups that you are strongly interested in attracting, look at the things that group might be interested in and how you can engage them.

Tip #3 Learn what makes those groups ‘tick’

After identifying the areas that your target market is passionate about, you must also think about which pain points may be in their lives. What might be seen as a problem or fear for one group may not be the same for another group. Connecting with each group on an emotional level will enable you to communicate what you are attempting to provide them and how it could benefit them. When you determine what group or demographic you can effectively serve, the method of communications will be different for each of these target groups.

Tip #4 Use emotional advertising to motivate them

Make a connection with people …to reach them on an emotional level. With businesses, advertising involves trying to motivate people. It’s the same with your church. You are trying to motivate people to attend your services, help out your community and to foster their faith. Ads are a way to make a connection with people and, to do that, you need to reach them on an emotional level.
Design an advertising campaign around the appropriate emotions that you discover in your community. Create a call-to-action. Once you have chosen your message, research the best ways to do that.

Tip #5 Target your advertising using proximity marketing

Advertising to the public at large is okay, but you should also think about more targeted messaging. Think about the groups of people that you identified with, their specific passions and interests, and how you can reach them directly. An effective and affordable method is a relatively new technology called proximity marketing, a service that enables you to expose your message to your local target market base faster than other sources. The GO, a tiny piece of hardware that fits in the palm of your hand, is used to broadcast your message which can then be viewed as a notification on smartphones and devices that come within range of it.
When you subscribe, you can choose GO BASIC, a short message and link, or the add-on GO PLUS, an ad version with graphic, business details and various ways to share your message, contact you or visit your website. The GOs, which you receive free with your GO SERVICES subscriptions, can be programmed with different messages aimed at specific age groups and sent with high school or college students from your church. You can also leave GOs at your local coffee shops frequented by business professionals who will receive a specific message targeted to them.
The list of ideas is endless, but as you can see, with GO SERVICES, proximity marketing is easily customizable to each target market. You can even track the exposures generated by each GO in real-time. The exposures are your proof that proximity marketing is working for you.
By identifying community groups by interest, learning what makes them tick and what motivates them, and using tailored messages to targeted audiences, you can effectively market your church to grow your congregation.
